Al-Ahzab
إِذۡ جَآءُوكُم مِّن فَوۡقِكُمۡ وَمِنۡ أَسۡفَلَ مِنكُمۡ وَإِذۡ زَاغَتِ ٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرُ وَبَلَغَتِ ٱلۡقُلُوبُ ٱلۡحَنَاجِرَ وَتَظُنُّونَ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلظُّنُونَا۠
10When your enemies came upon you from above you and from below you, and when your eyes were staring (due to terror) and the hearts reached to the throats, and several doubts were created in you about Allah (this was the state of mind of some believers at that time).
10The reason for descending the verse
On the authority of Huzaifah (r.a) he said on the night of Al-Ahzab,“I saw us Muslims sitting in lines and Abu Sufyan with the confederates over us and Banu Quraytha below us of whom we felt afraid lest they would attack our children and women.No night darker and stormier has ever come upon us then this night. The hypocrites went on seeking the permission of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) saying ‘our houses are exposed to the enemies’ but they indeed were not so. None of them has taken permission but that he was given leave and slipped away from the camp.Then Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) received us one by one till he came upon me, he said,‘Detect for news of the disbelievers. I went to find that the wind was blowing on their camp and did not go beyond it even for a span. By Allah, while I was hearing the voice of stones in their tents and luggage, wind was striking them and they were saying, ‘Let us go,let us go!’ I came back and informed him about the people, in this occasion revealed this verse.” (Jalal Al-Din As-Suyuti, Lubab Al-Nuqal fi Asbabi Al-Nuzul: 156)
