Al-Anam
وَأَقۡسَمُواْ بِٱللَّهِ جَهۡدَ أَيۡمَٰنِهِمۡ لَئِن جَآءَتۡهُمۡ ءَايَةٞ لَّيُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهَاۚ قُلۡ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡأٓيَٰتُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِۖ وَمَا يُشۡعِرُكُمۡ أَنَّهَآ إِذَا جَآءَتۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ
109And they swear by Allah in the strongest possible terms stating that if a miracle comes (from one of their demanded miracles) to them, they shall surely believe in it. [O Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)!] Say: “All mira-cles are in Allah’s control, and you (O believers) don’t know (but Allah knows), that even if those miracles came, they would not believe.”
109The reason for descending the verse
Narrated by Muhammad bin Ka’ab and he said, “The Quraysh said, ‘O Muhammad! You told us that Musa (a.s) had a stick and when he struck a rock with his stick, 12 fountains of water splashed out, and Isa (Jesus a.s) could bring people back from the dead, and Salih (a.s) was given a camel as a sign to the people of Thamud; then show us your sign for us to believe you’. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said,‘What do you want?’They answered,‘Turn that Safa Mount into gold’. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said, ‘If I grant your wish, would you believe me?’ They answered, ‘By Allah! If you grant our wish, we will follow you’. Then, the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) stood up and prayed. The Angel Jibril came to the Prophet (s.a.w) and said, ‘You can turn it into gold if you want it, but if they don’t believe it, surely Allah will torment them. If you are willing, leave them so Allah forgives them’. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said, ‘I will leave them until Allah forgives them’. Therefore, this verse was sent down.” (Al-Wahidi,Reasons of Revelation
