Al-Baqarah
يَسَۡٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلشَّهۡرِ ٱلۡحَرَامِ قِتَالٖ فِيهِۖ قُلۡ قِتَالٞ فِيهِ كَبِيرٞۚ وَصَدٌّ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَكُفۡرُۢ بِهِۦ وَٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِ وَإِخۡرَاجُ أَهۡلِهِۦ مِنۡهُ أَكۡبَرُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِۚ وَٱلۡفِتۡنَةُ أَكۡبَرُ مِنَ ٱلۡقَتۡلِۗ وَلَا يَزَالُونَ يُقَٰتِلُونَكُمۡ حَتَّىٰ يَرُدُّوكُمۡ عَن دِينِكُمۡ إِنِ ٱسۡتَطَٰعُواْۚ وَمَن يَرۡتَدِدۡ مِنكُمۡ عَن دِينِهِۦ فَيَمُتۡ وَهُوَ كَافِرٞ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتۡ أَعۡمَٰلُهُمۡ فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةِۖ وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ
217They ask you concerning figh-ting in the Sacred Months (Muhar-ram, Rajab, Dhul-qada, Dhul-hijjah). Say: “Fighting during these months is a major sin and to hin-der people in following the Path of Allah, to disbelieve in Allah, to prevent access to Masjid-al-Haram and to expel its residents, are even bigger sins in the sight of Allah. And disbelief is a bigger (sin) than killing. These people will not stop fighting against you, until they turn you from belief to disbelief, if they can. And whoever reverts to disbelief and dies as a disbeliever, then his deeds will become null and void in this world and in the Hereafter. And they will be residents of Hell-Fire and they will reside there forever.”
217The reason for descending the verse
Az-Zuhri said, “The Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) sent 'Abd Allah ibn Jahsh with a group of Muhajirin [in a military expedition]. One of the men who accompanied him, 'Abd Allah ibn Waqid al-Laythi, killed one of the disbelievers, 'Amr ibn al-Hadrami, in the last day of Rajab; they also captured two prisoners and seized the camels of the disbelievers. When the Prophet (s.a.w) found out, he told them, 'I did not command you to fight in the sacred month'. But the Quraysh said, 'Muhammad has violated the sacred month'. It was then that was revealed. (They ask you about the sacred month - about fighting therein. Say, ‘Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-Haram, and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of Allah. And fitnah is greater than killing...)”(Al-Wahidi,Reasons of Revelation)
