Al-Maidah
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱذۡكُرُواْ نِعۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيۡكُمۡ إِذۡ هَمَّ قَوۡمٌ أَن يَبۡسُطُوٓاْ إِلَيۡكُمۡ أَيۡدِيَهُمۡ فَكَفَّ أَيۡدِيَهُمۡ عَنكُمۡۖ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ
11O you who believe! Remember the Favour of Allah to you when some people intended to stretch out their hands against you (i.e. planned to finish you), so Allah withheld their hands from you. (Finally, you defeated them). So fear Allah. And believers should put their trust in Allah.
11The reason for descending the verse
Mujahid, Al-Kalbi, and ‘Ikrimah said, “One of the Companions of the Prophet (s.a.w) killed two men from Banu Salim at a period when the Prophet of Allah (s.a.w) had a truce with Banu Salim. The next-of-kin of the two men went to the Prophet (s.a.w) to ask for blood money. The Prophet(s.a.w) took Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman, ‘Ali, Talhah, and ‘Abdurrahman ibn ‘Auf and went to Ka‘b al-Ashraf, to seek help from Banu’l-Nadir to pay the blood money. They said, ‘Indeed Abu’l-Qasim, it is high time for you to come and ask us to help you. Sit down so that we feed you and fulfill your request’. When the Prophet and his Companions sat down, they gathered close by and said to each other, ‘Muhammad will never be as close to you as he is now; who can climb up to the top of the house, throw a rock on him and rid us of him?’ ‘Umar ibn Jihash ibn Ka‘b said, ‘I will do it!’ He got hold of a huge millstone intending to throw it on the Prophet (s.a.w), but Allah (exalted is He) prevented him from doing so. When Angel Jibril informed the Prophet of Allah (s.a.w) of what happened, the Prophet of Allah(s.a.w) left that house, and Allahrevealed this verse.”(Al-Wahidi,Reasons of Revelation and Al-Suyuti in Lubab)
