وَلَقَدۡ أَخَذۡنَٰهُم بِٱلۡعَذَابِ فَمَا ٱسۡتَكَانُواْ لِرَبِّهِمۡ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَ

And We did seize them with punishment (i.e. defeat in Badr), but they did not bend a bit to their Creator nor cared to humble themselves to Him.
