Ale-Imran
بَلَىٰٓۚ إِن تَصۡبِرُواْ وَتَتَّقُواْ وَيَأۡتُوكُم مِّن فَوۡرِهِمۡ هَٰذَا يُمۡدِدۡكُمۡ رَبُّكُم بِخَمۡسَةِ ءَالَٰفٖ مِّنَ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ مُسَوِّمِينَ
125Yes, indeed, if you be patient and observe piety, and the enemy attacks you all of a sudden, Allah will help you with five thousand angels having special marks of distinction.
125The reason for descending the verse
At the Battle of Badr, the Muslims heard that Karz bin Jabir al-Muharibi would send soldiers to help the Mushrikun (idols worshipers). This assistance made the Muslims doubtful and worried. Then Allah sent down surah Ali 'Imran (3:124) as the explanation of Allah would assist them with 3,000 angels. WhenKarz heard that the Mushrikun (idols worshipers) was defeated, Karzcancelled his reinforcement. Likewise, Allah cancelled reinforcing His 5,000 angels. (Abdurrazaq, Al-Musannaf)
