About the Surah

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

By the heaven, and by the night visitor (i.e. the bright star).

What do you know about the night visitor?

It is a bright star.

Every human being has a protector (i.e. angel) appointed over him (who guards him and records his deeds). (Note just as the stars in the heavens are fully protected though they appear at night only, similarly the deeds of a person are fully protected though they will appear in the Hereafter).I

(Hence, man should think about the Hereafter. If he is in doubt then) man should see from what he is created!

He is created from the water which gushes forth,

 It is produced between the backbone and the ribs.

(Hence, if Allah can create a man from drops of worthless water) He is, then, indeed, Able to bring him back to life.

The Day when all secrets (deeds) will be tested (or evaluated).

Then he will have no power (to oppose), nor any helper (to get rid of the punishment).

And by the sky from which rain falls again and again.

And by the earth which splits (at the time of growth of the plants).

Indeed, it (i.e. Quran) makes absolute distinction (between truth and falsehood).

And it is not (a useless) thing for mere amusement.

Indeed, they (the disbelievers) are making a strategy.

[O Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)! don’t worry.] I am also making a strategy (against the disbelievers).

       Hence, postpone the action against the disbelievers and leave them alone for a short while. (Also see Surah Al-Araf:182 and 183).
