At-Taubah
وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُواْ مَسۡجِدٗا ضِرَارٗا وَكُفۡرٗا وَتَفۡرِيقَۢا بَيۡنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَإِرۡصَادٗا لِّمَنۡ حَارَبَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ مِن قَبۡلُۚ وَلَيَحۡلِفُنَّ إِنۡ أَرَدۡنَآ إِلَّا ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰۖ وَٱللَّهُ يَشۡهَدُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَٰذِبُونَ
107And (those hypocrites) who built a masjid to harm, to conspire against Islam, to split the believers and to make a refuge for him who fought against Allah and His messenger in the past. And they will swear that their intention is good. And Allah bears witness that they are, indeed, liars.
107The reason for descending the verse
Narrated by Abu Ruhm (one of those who gave the pledge of allegiance in Hudaibiyyah) that those who built Mosque “Dirar” came to the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) when he was preparing for the expedition of Tabuk. They said, “O Messenger of Allah! We have built a mosque for the sick and the needy and also for use on rainy and wintry nights, and we would like you to come and pray in it.” The Messenger of Allah replied, “I am very busy now in making preparations for the Battle of Tabuk. On my return I shall fulfill your wish.” When he was returning from Tabuk, he stopped over at Dzu Awan, a place one hour from Madinah. Then this verse was revealed to forbid the Messenger of Allah performing prayerin Mosque “Dirar”. This mosque was built to cause split among the Muslim community.
