At-Taubah
لَقَدۡ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِي مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٖ وَيَوۡمَ حُنَيۡنٍ إِذۡ أَعۡجَبَتۡكُمۡ كَثۡرَتُكُمۡ فَلَمۡ تُغۡنِ عَنكُمۡ شَيۡٔٗا وَضَاقَتۡ عَلَيۡكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتۡ ثُمَّ وَلَّيۡتُم مُّدۡبِرِينَ
25Definitely Allah made you victorious in many battlefields and especially on the Day of Hunain, when you boasted on your large numbers. Your large numbers did not do you any good and earth, with all its vastness, shrank on you and then you turned back running.
25The reason for descending the verse
Ar-Rabi ibn Anas said, “On the day of Hunain battle, a man said,‘Today, we will not be defeated by a few number of people’, and they (the Muslims) were twelve thousand. This statement was difficult on the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), thereupon Allah revealed this verse.”(As-Suyuti from Al-Bayhaqi in Ad-Dalai)
