Az-Zukhruf
۞وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ٱبۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ مَثَلًا إِذَا قَوۡمُكَ مِنۡهُ يَصِدُّونَ
57[Once Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “All those who are worshipped besides Allah, there is no good in them.” The idolaters of Makkah said: “It means there is no good in Isa ( )who is worshipped by Christians like our idols.” Allah answered this in Su-rah Al-Anbiya: 98-103]. And when the son of Maryam is quoted as an example (i.e. Isa ( )is worshipped like other idols), your people sud-denly cried aloud joyfully at this example.
57The reason for descending the verse
On the authourity Ibn ‘Abbas that he said, “The Prophet of Allah (s.a.w) said to the Quraysh, ‘O Quraysh, there is no good in anyone who is worshipped besides Allah’. They said to him, ‘Do you not claim that Jesus was a prophet and a righteous slave? If what you claim is true, he is like a deity to them’. As a response, Allah (exalted is He) revealed this verse.” (Al-Wahidi,Reasons of Revelation)
