Al-Fath
وَلِلَّهِ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ يَغۡفِرُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورٗا رَّحِيمٗا
14And the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And Allah is Very Forgiving, Most Merciful.
14The reason for descending the verse
At that timea rumourwas being spread that ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan (as a delegation of the Prophet to Makkah) was killed by the Quraish. There arouse a sense of solidarity amongst the believers and they were determined to fight against them. They gave a pledge of allegiance to the Prophet (s.a.w), so that Uthman was returned by the Quraish to them safely; then later there wasthe peace treaty of Hudaibiyyah.
