Al-Maidah
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تُحِلُّواْ شَعَٰٓئِرَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا ٱلشَّهۡرَ ٱلۡحَرَامَ وَلَا ٱلۡهَدۡيَ وَلَا ٱلۡقَلَٰٓئِدَ وَلَآ ءَآمِّينَ ٱلۡبَيۡتَ ٱلۡحَرَامَ يَبۡتَغُونَ فَضۡلٗا مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡ وَرِضۡوَٰنٗاۚ وَإِذَا حَلَلۡتُمۡ فَٱصۡطَادُواْۚ وَلَا يَجۡرِمَنَّكُمۡ شَنََٔانُ قَوۡمٍ أَن صَدُّوكُمۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِ أَن تَعۡتَدُواْۘ وَتَعَاوَنُواْ عَلَى ٱلۡبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقۡوَىٰۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُواْ عَلَى ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَٰنِۚ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِيدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ
2O you who believe! Don’t violate the sanctity of the Symbols of Allah, nor of the sacred month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the animals with garlands around their necks (meant for sacrifice), nor the people visiting the Sacred House (in Makkah) seeking the bounty and good pleasure of their Creator. But when you put off Ihram, you are allowed to hunt. And let not the hatred for the people who (once) stopped you visiting Masjid-al-Haram provoke you to transgress against them. You should cooperate with each other in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate with each other in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.
2The reason for descending the verse
Said Zayd ibn Aslam said, “The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) and his Companions were in Hudaibiyyah when the idolaters barred them from entering the Sacred House. The Muslims were devastated. Then a group of idolaters passed by them as they were on their way to perform Umrah. Some of the Companions of the Messenger (s.a.w) said, ‘Let us bar these people as their friends have barred us’. And so Allah (exalted is He) revealed (O ye who believe! Profane not Allah’s monuments nor the Sacred Month nor the offerings nor the garlands, nor those repairing to the Sacred House), i.e. do not transgress against these pilgrims because their friends have barred you from entering the Sacred House.” (Al-Wahidi,Reasons of Revelation and Al-Suyuti in Lubab)
