About the Surah

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

O you [Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)!] enveloped in clothes!

Stand up! (And) go to warn (the disbelievers).

And mention the Greatness of your Creator (i.e. Oneness of Allah is the most important).

And purify your clothes.

And keep away from the idols (as you have been so far).

And don’t give something while expecting more in return.-

And be patient to please your Creator.

Then, when the (second) Trumpet is blown.

So that Day will be a very hard Day.

Not easy for the disbelievers.

       Leave Me (to deal) with whom I created alone (i.e. at time of birth he was without wealth and children e.g. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah).

And then granted him plenty of wealth.

And children to enjoy their company.

And I gave him a lot of comforts of life (i.e. long life, leader of his tribe etc.).        Still he desires to have more.

No way. Indeed, he has been opposing Our revelations.

Soon I shall make him climb an extremely difficult mountain of (Hell-Fire) – Fath Al-Qadeer.

Indeed, he thought and plotted.

May he be destroyed, how he plotted!

Then he thought (how to oppose the Quran).

Then he frowned and showed displeasure with bad temper.

Then he turned back (from the truth) and was arrogant.

Then he said: “This is nothing but a magic coming down (from the old times),”

“This is nothing but speech of a human being!”

Soon I shall throw him into Hell-Fire.

And do you know what Hell-Fire is like?

It does not spare nor does it leave (any flesh or bone of the dis-believers).

It burns (and roasts) the skin!

There are nineteen (guardians) over it (i.e. Hell).

Not at all (i.e. they will not be able to overpower the angels, as claimed by the disbelievers of Makkah). And by the moon.

And by the night when it with-draws.

And by the dawn when it becomes bright.

Indeed, it [(i) Hell, or (ii) the Day of Resurrection] is but one of the greatest (signs).

A warning to mankind. [Here warning means (i) Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) or (ii) the Quran or (iii) Hell].

Whosoever chooses from you to go forward (by good deeds) or go backward (it is a warning for them).

       Every person is a hostage to his deeds (i.e. His good deeds will save him from punishment and His bad deeds will cause him destruction).

Except those on the Right (i.e. they will be free due to their good deeds).

While residing in Gardens (Paradise), they will ask

(Regarding) the criminals (i.e. believers will ask the criminals).

“What has caused you to enter Hell?”

They will say: “We were not offering the Salat,”

“Nor did we use to feed the needy,”

“And we used to engage in useless discussions with the vain talkers.”

“And we used to deny the Day of Judgement,”

“Until death came to us.” (Also see Surah Al-Hijr:99)

Hence, none of the intercessor will benefit them (since intercession is for believers only).

Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from the advice.

(Their example is) like a (frightened) wild donkey.

Fleeing from a lion.

In fact, every one of them desires that they should be given an open book (from Allah with the writing that Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah’s messenger).

Not at all. In fact, they don’t fear the Hereafter.

Not at all. Indeed, this (the Quran) is full of advice and re-minders.

So whosoever desires may receive advice from it (by reading and pondering over it).

And none can receive this advice except whom Allah wills. (And there is some hidden wisdom when He does not will). Only He deserves to be feared of and Only He grants forgiveness (of sins).
