An-Najm
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَٰٓئِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِۚ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِكُمۡ إِذۡ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِذۡ أَنتُمۡ أَجِنَّةٞ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَٰتِكُمۡۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمۡۖ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ
32(The good believers are those) who avoid the major sins and the obscene activities except the small faults (or minor sins). Indeed, your Creator is of Vast Forgiveness. He knew you when He created you from the earth [Adam ( )], and when you were hidden (as babies) in your mothers’ wombs. Hence, don’t profess yourself to be pious people. Allah knows best who has true piety.
32The reason for descending the verse
Thabit ibn Al-Harith al-Ansari said, “The Jews used to say when they lost a young boy, ‘He is a Tsadoq (Siddiq)’. The Prophet (s.a.w) heard of this and commented, ‘The Jews have lied. No living person that Allah creates in the womb of his mother except that it is either felicitous or damned’. Upon which Allah revealed this.”(Al-Wahidi,Reasons of Revelation)
