Al-Fath
۞لَّقَدۡ رَضِيَ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ إِذۡ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحۡتَ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ فَعَلِمَ مَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَأَنزَلَ ٱلسَّكِينَةَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَأَثَٰبَهُمۡ فَتۡحٗا قَرِيبٗا
18Indeed, Allah was (highly) pleased with the believers when they made the pledge to you [O Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) !] under the tree (to be steadfast during the fighting). And Allah knew what was in their hearts. So Allah sent down calmness upon them and (apart from this favour) Allah gave them (a physical reward) of a near victory (i.e. of Khaiber).
18The reason for descending the verse
On the authority of Salmah ibn Al-Akwah he said,“When the Companions were resting during the day, a messenger of the Prophet (s.a.w) exclaimed, ‘O Muslims, let’s give the pledge of allegiance’. Soon the Muslims faced the Prophet (s.a.w) when he was sheltering under a samurah tree. They gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet (s.a.w). So Allah revealed the verse (Indeed, Allah was pleased with the believers when they gave the Bai’ah [pledge] to you [Muhammad] under the tree; He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down as-Sakinah [calmness and tranquility] upon them, and He rewarded them with a near victory)”[Surah Al-Fath, 48:18] (Jalaluddin As-Suyuti in Lubab)
