About the Surah

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

Woe to those who give less in measure and weight (i.e. to defraud).

Those who when they receive by measure from people they make sure that they receive full measure.

And when they give by measure or weight to others, they give less (than fair amount).

Do they not think that they will be brought to life again (for accountability),        

 On a great Day ?

The Day when all people will stand before the Creator of the universe.

Not at all (i.e. the thinking of the disbelievers is not correct). Indeed, the Book (i.e. the records of deeds) of the disbelievers is preserved in Sijjin (a prison or a location in the lowest part of the earth).

What do you know about Sijjin?

It is a written book (i.e. all deeds are written in it).

That Day, woe to those who deny.

Those who deny the Day of Judgement.

And none denies it except a transgressor, a sinner.

When Our Verses are recited to him, he says: “These are tales of ancient times!”

Not at all. In fact, there is rust covering their hearts due to the (evil) deeds they used to do.

Not at all (i.e. the thinking of the disbelievers is not correct). They (the disbelievers) will, indeed, be kept behind a barrier to prevent them from seeing their Creator that Day.

Then they will, indeed, enter Hell-Fire.

Then it will be said to them: “This is what you used to deny.”

       Not at all (i.e. the thinking of the disbelievers is not correct).  Indeed, the Record (of deeds) of the pious persons is (preserved) in Illiyyen (a location in Paradise).

And what do you know, what Illiyyun is?

It is a written book (i.e. all deeds are written in it).

The nearest (to Allah i.e. angels) witness it.

Indeed, the pious persons will be in Delight (i.e. Paradise)

(Seated) on couches, they will be looking (at all things).

You will recognize the bright-ness on their faces due to the favours (of Allah).

They will be served with pure sealed wine to drink.

       It will have the scent of musk. Hence, let all those who strive (for good), strive towards these (Favours and rewards of Allah). (Also see Surah As-Saffat:61)

And (that wine) will be mixed with Tasnim (the best wine of Paradise).

It is a spring from which only those who are nearest to Allah drink.

Indeed, the criminals used to laugh at the believers (during the worldly life).

And whenever they (the dis-believers) happened to pass near the believers, the disbelievers used to wink (to one another to mock at the believers).

And when the disbelievers returned to their families, they would return joking (and laughing at the believers).

And whenever they (the disbelievers) saw the believers, they said: “Indeed, these are the people out of their minds!”

And they (the disbelievers) are not sent as guardians over them (the believers).

 Hence, on this Day (of Resur-rection), the believers will laugh at the disbelievers.

(Seated) on (high) couches, they will be looking (at all things).

Are not the disbelievers paid back exactly for what they used to do?
