وَٱسۡتَبَقَا ٱلۡبَابَ وَقَدَّتۡ قَمِيصَهُۥ مِن دُبُرٖ وَأَلۡفَيَا سَيِّدَهَا لَدَا ٱلۡبَابِۚ قَالَتۡ مَا جَزَآءُ مَنۡ أَرَادَ بِأَهۡلِكَ سُوٓءًا إِلَّآ أَن يُسۡجَنَ أَوۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٞ 25

25        And both ran towards the door and she pulled his shirt from the back and tore it. They both met her husband at the door. She said: “What else could be the punishment for a person who has bad intention for your wife except that he be put in a prison or have a painful torment.”

قَالَ هِيَ رَٰوَدَتۡنِي عَن نَّفۡسِيۚ وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدٞ مِّنۡ أَهۡلِهَآ إِن كَانَ قَمِيصُهُۥ قُدَّ مِن قُبُلٖ فَصَدَقَتۡ وَهُوَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَٰذِبِينَ 26

26        Yusuf ( peace be upon him )  said: “Actually, she was trying to seduce me towards herself.” And a (sensible) person from her tribe bore witness (i.e. gave decision:) “If his shirt is torn from the front, then she is speaking the truth and he is a liar.

وَإِن كَانَ قَمِيصُهُۥ قُدَّ مِن دُبُرٖ فَكَذَبَتۡ وَهُوَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ 27

27        “And if his shirt is torn from the back, then she is telling a lie and he is speaking the truth.”

فَلَمَّا رَءَا قَمِيصَهُۥ قُدَّ مِن دُبُرٖ قَالَ إِنَّهُۥ مِن كَيۡدِكُنَّۖ إِنَّ كَيۡدَكُنَّ عَظِيمٞ 28

28        So when her husband saw Yusuf’s ( peace be upon him )  shirt torn at the back, he said: “Indeed, it is an (evil) plot of you women! Certainly your plot is very big.

يُوسُفُ أَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡ هَٰذَاۚ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرِي لِذَنۢبِكِۖ إِنَّكِ كُنتِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَاطِ‍ِٔينَ 29

29        “O Yusuf ( peace be upon him ) ! Ignore this incident. And (O Woman!) you better ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you are one of the sinful people.”

۞وَقَالَ نِسۡوَةٞ فِي ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ ٱمۡرَأَتُ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ تُرَٰوِدُ فَتَىٰهَا عَن نَّفۡسِهِۦۖ قَدۡ شَغَفَهَا حُبًّاۖ إِنَّا لَنَرَىٰهَا فِي ضَلَٰلٖ مُّبِينٖ 30

30        (It became a town talk among the women). And the women in the city said: “The wife of Aziz is trying to seduce her slave-boy. Indeed, she loves him deeply. Indeed, we see her in an obvious error.”

فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتۡ بِمَكۡرِهِنَّ أَرۡسَلَتۡ إِلَيۡهِنَّ وَأَعۡتَدَتۡ لَهُنَّ مُتَّكَ‍ٔٗا وَءَاتَتۡ كُلَّ وَٰحِدَةٖ مِّنۡهُنَّ سِكِّينٗا وَقَالَتِ ٱخۡرُجۡ عَلَيۡهِنَّۖ فَلَمَّا رَأَيۡنَهُۥٓ أَكۡبَرۡنَهُۥ وَقَطَّعۡنَ أَيۡدِيَهُنَّ وَقُلۡنَ حَٰشَ لِلَّهِ مَا هَٰذَا بَشَرًا إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا مَلَكٞ كَرِيمٞ 31

31        When she heard about their blame she sent for them for a banquet. And she gave each of them a knife (to cut fruit etc.), and she said [to Yusuf ( peace be upon him ) ]: “Come out before these ladies.” When they saw Yusuf ( peace be upon him ) , they were amazed (at his beauty) and (in their astonishment) they cut their hands. They said: “How perfect is Allah! He does not look like a man. He is rather a noble angel.”

قَالَتۡ فَذَٰلِكُنَّ ٱلَّذِي لُمۡتُنَّنِي فِيهِۖ وَلَقَدۡ رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ عَن نَّفۡسِهِۦ فَٱسۡتَعۡصَمَۖ وَلَئِن لَّمۡ يَفۡعَلۡ مَآ ءَامُرُهُۥ لَيُسۡجَنَنَّ وَلَيَكُونٗا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰغِرِينَ 32

32        She said (to the ladies): “You blamed me about this man. True, I did try to seduce him but he abstained. If he does not agree to my instruction, he shall certainly be put in prison and will be one of those who are disgraced.”

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱلسِّجۡنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا يَدۡعُونَنِيٓ إِلَيۡهِۖ وَإِلَّا تَصۡرِفۡ عَنِّي كَيۡدَهُنَّ أَصۡبُ إِلَيۡهِنَّ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡجَٰهِلِينَ 33

33        (Yusuf ( peace be upon him )  made the fol-low-ing supplication): “O my Cre-ator! I prefer prison to what these ladies invite me to. Unless You foil their plot against me, I will be inclined towards them and will be-come one of the ignorant people.”

فَٱسۡتَجَابَ لَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥ فَصَرَفَ عَنۡهُ كَيۡدَهُنَّۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ 34

34        So his Creator answered his supplication and foiled their plot against him. Indeed, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا رَأَوُاْ ٱلۡأٓيَٰتِ لَيَسۡجُنُنَّهُۥ حَتَّىٰ حِينٖ 35

35        Even after seeing the proofs [of the innocence of Yusuf ( peace be upon him ) ] they felt it is better to imprison Yusuf ( peace be upon him )  for the time being.

وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ ٱلسِّجۡنَ فَتَيَانِۖ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَآ إِنِّيٓ أَرَىٰنِيٓ أَعۡصِرُ خَمۡرٗاۖ وَقَالَ ٱلۡأٓخَرُ إِنِّيٓ أَرَىٰنِيٓ أَحۡمِلُ فَوۡقَ رَأۡسِي خُبۡزٗا تَأۡكُلُ ٱلطَّيۡرُ مِنۡهُۖ نَبِّئۡنَا بِتَأۡوِيلِهِۦٓۖ إِنَّا نَرَىٰكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ 36

36        And two young men also entered with him in the prison. One of them said: “Indeed, I saw (in a dream) that I am squeezing (grapes etc) to make wine.” The other said: “I saw (in a dream) that I am carrying bread on my head and birds were eating that bread.” (They said:) “(Please) give us the inter-pretation of this. Indeed, we think you are one of the good people.”

قَالَ لَا يَأۡتِيكُمَا طَعَامٞ تُرۡزَقَانِهِۦٓ إِلَّا نَبَّأۡتُكُمَا بِتَأۡوِيلِهِۦ قَبۡلَ أَن يَأۡتِيَكُمَاۚ ذَٰلِكُمَا مِمَّا عَلَّمَنِي رَبِّيٓۚ إِنِّي تَرَكۡتُ مِلَّةَ قَوۡمٖ لَّا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَهُم بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمۡ كَٰفِرُونَ 37

37        Yusuf ( peace be upon him )  said: “I shall give you the interpretation of this before your meals come to you. This is due to the knowledge which my Creator has bestowed upon me. I did quit the religion of the people who do not believe in Allah and they are also disbelievers of the Hereafter.

وَٱتَّبَعۡتُ مِلَّةَ ءَابَآءِيٓ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسۡحَٰقَ وَيَعۡقُوبَۚ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نُّشۡرِكَ بِٱللَّهِ مِن شَيۡءٖۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِن فَضۡلِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيۡنَا وَعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشۡكُرُونَ 38

38        “And I have followed the religion of my forefathers Ibrahim ( peace be upon him ) , Ishaq ( peace be upon him )  and Yaqub ( peace be upon him ) . It is not befitting for us to ascribe partners in worship with Allah. This is due to the Grace of Allah to us and to mankind but most of the people don’t give thanks (for this favour).

يَٰصَٰحِبَيِ ٱلسِّجۡنِ ءَأَرۡبَابٞ مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ خَيۡرٌ أَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡوَٰحِدُ ٱلۡقَهَّارُ 39

39        “O two fellow prisoners! Are many different gods better or Allah, the One, the Supreme?

مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَسۡمَآءٗ سَمَّيۡتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلۡطَٰنٍۚ إِنِ ٱلۡحُكۡمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعۡبُدُوٓاْ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ 40

40        “Those whom you worship besides Allah are merely names which you and your forefathers have forged for which Allah has sent down no authority. Indeed, the sovereignty belongs to none but Allah. He has commanded that you don’t worship anybody besides Him. That is the (true) straight religion but most of the men don’t know. (Also Surah Yusuf:103)

يَٰصَٰحِبَيِ ٱلسِّجۡنِ أَمَّآ أَحَدُكُمَا فَيَسۡقِي رَبَّهُۥ خَمۡرٗاۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلۡأٓخَرُ فَيُصۡلَبُ فَتَأۡكُلُ ٱلطَّيۡرُ مِن رَّأۡسِهِۦۚ قُضِيَ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ ٱلَّذِي فِيهِ تَسۡتَفۡتِيَانِ 41

41        “O two fellow prisoners! One of you will serve wine to his master and the other will be crucified and birds will eat from his head. Thus matter has been decided about which both of you inquired.”

وَقَالَ لِلَّذِي ظَنَّ أَنَّهُۥ نَاجٖ مِّنۡهُمَا ٱذۡكُرۡنِي عِندَ رَبِّكَ فَأَنسَىٰهُ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ ذِكۡرَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِي ٱلسِّجۡنِ بِضۡعَ سِنِينَ 42

42        (When both of them were about to leave the prison), Yusuf ( peace be upon him )  said to the one who was expected to be saved from them: “Remind your master about me (i.e. there is a person in prison without any crime on his part, the prisoner promised).” But Satan made him forget to mention to his master. Hence, Yusuf ( peace be upon him )  stayed in prison for several more years.

وَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلِكُ إِنِّيٓ أَرَىٰ سَبۡعَ بَقَرَٰتٖ سِمَانٖ يَأۡكُلُهُنَّ سَبۡعٌ عِجَافٞ وَسَبۡعَ سُنۢبُلَٰتٍ خُضۡرٖ وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَٰتٖۖ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمَلَأُ أَفۡتُونِي فِي رُءۡيَٰيَ إِن كُنتُمۡ لِلرُّءۡيَا تَعۡبُرُونَ 43

43        And the king said: “Indeed, I saw (in dream) seven fat cows whom seven lean cows were eating, and there were seven green ears of corn and seven dry ones. O advisors! Explain to me my dream if you are capable of interpreting the dreams.”

قَالُوٓاْ أَضۡغَٰثُ أَحۡلَٰمٖۖ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِتَأۡوِيلِ ٱلۡأَحۡلَٰمِ بِعَٰلِمِينَ 44

44        They said: “These are con-fusing dreams. We are not inter-preters of such confusing dreams.” (We are only skilled in the affairs of the country).
