About the Surah

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

       Ya-Sin (Only Allah knows their meanings).

       By the Quran, full of wisdom.

       Indeed, you [Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)] are one of the messengers.

       On a Straight Path.

       (The Quran) is sent down by the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

       In order that you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned (by a Prophet very near to them). So (due to this) they are heedless.

       Indeed, the Word (of punish-ment) is justified for most of them, hence they will not believe.

       Indeed, We have put on their necks iron collars which reach up to their chins, so that their heads are raised up (and become stiff). (With their raised heads they cannot even see the Path. Hence, how can they follow that Path which they can’t see? This is an example of their rigid denial).

       And We have put a barrier in front of them (i.e. made this life attractive to them) and a barrier behind them (i.e. they are totally heedless of the Hereafter). So We have covered them, hence they cannot see. (This is another example to show the state of mind of the disbelievers).

       And it is the same to them whether you warn them or not, they will not believe (i.e. they have gone too far astray because of their evil deeds. Warning will not benefit them anymore).

       Indeed, you can only warn him who follows the advice and fears the Most Gracious (Allah) unseen. So convey the glad tidings of forgiveness, and a generous reward (i.e. Paradise) for him.

       Indeed, We give life to the dead (or We can make a disbeliever, who is like a dead person, alive with faith). And We do record your deeds which you send forward and also those deeds which you leave as an example for others. And We have everything recorded in the Clear Book.

       And describe to them an example of a town in which (se-veral) messengers came. (Hence, the coming of a messenger to the people of Makkah is not a new or a strange thing).

       When We sent to them two messengers, they denied them both, so We strengthened them with the third. Hence, they said: “Indeed, we have been sent to you (as messengers).”

       The residents of the town said: “You are ordinary human beings like us, and the Most Gracious (Allah) has sent nothing. Indeed, you are just liars.”

       The messengers said: “Our Creator knows that, indeed, we have been sent (as messengers) to you,

       And we are here to simply convey the clear message.”

       The people said: “Indeed, we consider you an evil omen for us. If you don’t stop, we will surely stone you (to death) and you will surely have a painful punishment from us.”

       The messengers said: “Your evil omens are with you (i.e. due to your evil deeds). (Do you call it an evil omen) when you are given a (sincere) advice? In fact, you are a people who are extreme transgressors.”

       And there came a man running from the farthest part of the town. He said: “O my people! Obey the messengers.

“Do obey those who even don’t ask you any reward (for their service), and they are rightly guided.

       “And why should I not worship Him Who has created me and to whom you (all) shall be returned.

       “Should I worship others besides Him? In case the Most Gracious (Allah) wishes to harm me, their intercession will not benefit me, nor can they save me (from Allah).

       “Then, indeed, I shall be in obvious error.

       “Listen to me. Indeed, I have sincerely believed in your Creator” (in this way he made everyone witness to his Faith. But the disbelievers did not listen to him and killed him).

       It was said (to him): “Enter Paradise.” He said: “Would that my people knew,

       “That my Creator (Allah) has forgiven me and made me from the honoured people!”

       And We did not send any army from the heavens against his people after him, and it was not necessary for Us to send one. 

       It was only a big shout, so they were reduced to ashes instantly.

       Alas for mankind! Whenever a messenger came to them they mocked him.

       Don’t they see how many of the communities We have destroyed before them, that they will not return to them?

       And, indeed, every one of them will be brought before Us.

       (In the following Verses the signs of the Power of Allah and His Favours are described). And one of the signs for them is dead land. We revive it and bring out grain from it, so they eat from it.

       And We have made in it gardens of palm trees and grapes and We have made springs of water flow out of it (for the irrigation of these gardens).

       So that (like grain) people eat from its fruits. And this (grain and fruit) their hands did not make (although they put the seed and irrigated, but they have nothing to do in producing grain or fruits. Only Allah did. After seeing these proofs) then why don’t they thank (Allah)?

       Glorified is He Who has made pairs of all things that are produced by earth and pairs of human beings (male and female) and also of the things they don’t know. (e.g. life Here and of the Hereafter is a pair too. Only Allah is without pair proving the  Oneness of Allah).

       And a sign for them is the night. We withdraw the day from it, so you are left in total darkness.

       And the sun travels (or floats) in its assigned orbit for a fixed term. That is the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing. (Here Allah informed us that eventually the sun will cease to burn. We discovered this fact recently).

       And We have fixed the stages (i.e. 28 stages) for the moon till it returns like an old, (dried and curved), branch (of a tree).

       Neither the sun can overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. And all of them float in their own (assigned) orbits. (Or, each planet also rotates around its own axis, which we discovered recently).

       And a sign for them is that We carried their children (of Nuh ( )] in the laden ship.

       And We created other similar things, on which you ride (i.e. cars, aeroplanes etc).

       And if We will, We shall drown them, and there will be none to hear them, nor will they be saved.

       Unless We show Our mercy to them and let them benefit from this life for a while.

       And when it is said to them: “Fear (the torment) which is in front of you (i.e. which can occur in the worldly life e.g. drowning in the boat) and which is behind you (i.e. in the Hereafter) in order that you may receive the Mercy (of Allah).”

       And whenever a revelation comes to them from the revelations of their Creator, they turn away from it.

       And when it is said to them: “Spend from that which Allah has given you”, the disbelievers say to the believers: “Shall we feed those whom, if Allah willed, He (Himself) would have fed? You are in obvious error.”

       And they say (jokingly): “When will this promise (i.e. the Day of Judgement) be fulfilled, if you are truthful?”

       They are only waiting for a single shout (i.e. blowing of the first Trumpet) which will seize them while they are disputing!

       So they will not be able to make a will, nor will they be able to return to their family.

       And at the blowing of the (second) Trumpet, they will suddenly come out of their graves and will rush towards their Creator. 

       They will say: “Woe to us! Who woke us up from our place of sleep?” (It does not mean that there will be no punishment in the grave. As compared with the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, the period of stay in the grave will appear like a brief rest in a place of sleep). (It will be said to them): “This is what the Most Gracious (Allah) had promised and the messengers did speak the truth!”

       It will be a single shout (i.e. blowing of the second Trumpet), so they will be very quickly brought before Us!

       So on this Day (of Resur-rection), none will be wronged in any away, nor will you be treated except according to your deeds.

       Indeed, the residents of Para-dise will be joyfully busy in their favourite activities.

       They and their wives will be in (pleasant) shade, reclining on couches. 

       They will have (all kinds of) fruits and whatever they ask for.

       (It will be said to them): “Peace be upon you from the Creator (Allah), Most Merciful”. (This Salam of Allah will be conveyed to the people of Paradise by the angels. Others, like Ibn Majah, say it will be directly from Allah to the people of Paradise).

       And (it will be said:) “O you criminals! Get away (i.e. be sepa-rated) today (from the believers). (Also see Surah Ar-Rum:14)

       O Children of Adam! Did I not take this promise from you that you should not worship Satan? Indeed, He is, your obvious enemy.

       And that you should worship Me (Alone). That is the Straight Path.

       And, indeed, Satan did mislead a great number of people among you. Don’t you have sense?

       This is the Hell which you were promised.

       Enter (or burn in) it this Day to receive the reward of your disbelief.

       This Day, We shall seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs or feet will testify what they used to do.

       And had We willed, We would have blinded their eyes (to punish them for their disbelief), then though they would struggle hard for the Path, but how would they see? (But Allah did not do it out of His Mercy).

       And had We willed, We could have transformed them (into crip-pled animals or lifeless objects) at their locations (to punish them for their disbelief). Then they would not have been able to move around nor could they have turned back. (But Allah did not do it out of His Mercy).

       (Here is a proof of Our Power). And whoever We grant long life, We reverse him to his creation (i.e. he becomes weak like a child. Hence, If we can do that why cannot We transform them to animals?) Don’t you have sense?

       And We have not taught him [Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)] poetry, nor is it befitting for him. This is only a Reminder and clear Quran,

       So that he [Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)] may warn whoever is healthy minded (willing to accept the truth) and to justify the charge against the disbelievers.

       Don’t they see that We have (also) created for them the cattle from among the things which We created with Our own hands (i.e. without anybody’s help)? Then they became owners of them (to trade them or make use of them).

       And We have subdued (the cattle) for them so that they ride on some of them and eat some of them.

       And they have other benefits from them, and they (also) get drink (i.e. milk) from them. Even then, will they not thank (Allah)?

       And they make other gods besides Allah hoping that they might be helped.

       (Although) these false gods cannot help them at all. Even then they (the idolaters) are present there as an army of supporters (for these false gods).

       So let not their comments grieve you [O Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)!]. Indeed, We know what they hide and what they reveal.

       Doesn’t man see that We have created him from semen drops, yet he disputes openly and boldly?

       And he gives examples for Us and forgets his own (humble) creation. He says: “Who will give life to those bones when they are decomposed?”

       [O Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)!] Say: “He Who gave life to them the first time, will give life to them again. And He is All-Knower of every creation.”

       He Who created fire for you from the green tree, so you suddenly kindle with it.

       Is not He Who created the heavens and the earth, Able to create similar (human beings) again? Yes, indeed, He is the All-Knowing Creator. (Also see Surah Ghafir:57)

       Indeed, when He intends to do something, He simply gives Com-mand: “Be.” And it is there right away. (Why cannot so Powerful Allah recreate similar man again?)

       So glorified is He in Whose Hand is the Sovereignty of every-thing and to Him you shall be returned.
