ٱلَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالٗا وَعَدَّدَهُۥ 2

2 Who accumulates wealth (due to greed) and counts it (for its love and pride).

يَحۡسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُۥٓ أَخۡلَدَهُۥ 3

3 He thinks his wealth will stay with him forever (i.e. keep him alive for ever)!

كَلَّاۖ لَيُنۢبَذَنَّ فِي ٱلۡحُطَمَةِ 4

4 Not at all. He will certainly be thrown into Hell-Fire (which tears apart everything.

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡحُطَمَةُ 5

5 And what do you know about this (destructive) Hell-Fire?

نَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُوقَدَةُ 6

6 It is the Fire of Allah which is kindled (with the Command of Allah).

ٱلَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلۡأَفۡ‍ِٔدَةِ 7

7 It directly reaches the hearts (i.e. not limited to surface damage only).

إِنَّهَا عَلَيۡهِم مُّؤۡصَدَةٞ 8

8  Indeed, that Fire will be closed upon them from all directions.

فِي عَمَدٖ مُّمَدَّدَةِۢ 9

9 In lofty pillars (i.e. Fire is encircled by big pillars).

أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡفِيلِ 1

1 [O Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)!] Have you not seen how your Creator dealt with the owners of the elephants?

أَلَمۡ يَجۡعَلۡ كَيۡدَهُمۡ فِي تَضۡلِيلٖ 2

2 Did He not fail their strategy?

وَأَرۡسَلَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ طَيۡرًا أَبَابِيلَ 3

3 And He sent against them flocks of birds.

تَرۡمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٖ مِّن سِجِّيلٖ 4

4 Striking them with (tiny) stones of baked clay.

فَجَعَلَهُمۡ كَعَصۡفٖ مَّأۡكُولِۢ 5

5 So He made them like eaten-up grass (i.e. parts of their bodies were scattered like eaten-up grass).

لِإِيلَٰفِ قُرَيۡشٍ 1

1        The Quraish became used to (of their trade journeys i.e. the hardship of journey was removed due to Allah’s protection for them as residents of Makkah).

إِۦلَٰفِهِمۡ رِحۡلَةَ ٱلشِّتَآءِ وَٱلصَّيۡفِ 2

2 In their (trade) journeys (to Yemen) during winter and (to Syria) during summer (due to security and respect given to them as residents of Makkah).

فَلۡيَعۡبُدُواْ رَبَّ هَٰذَا ٱلۡبَيۡتِ 3

3 (To thank for this Favour of Allah) they should worship the Creator of this House (the Kabah in Makkah).

ٱلَّذِيٓ أَطۡعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٖ وَءَامَنَهُم مِّنۡ خَوۡفِۢ 4

4 (He) Who has fed them against hunger and has made them safe from fear

أَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِٱلدِّينِ 1

1       Have you seen him who denies the Day of reward and punishment (i.e. the Day of Judgement)? 

فَذَٰلِكَ ٱلَّذِي يَدُعُّ ٱلۡيَتِيمَ 2

2 So he who pushes and scares away the orphan.

وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينِ 3

3 And does not encourage (nor motivate) others to feed the needy.
